Candle Care

Get the Most From Your Candle

At 701 Candles, we craft each candle by hand using high-quality coconut apricot wax and thoughtfully curated fragrance blends. To ensure a safe, long-lasting, and beautifully aromatic burn, follow these simple but essential care tips:

1. The First Burn Matters

When lighting your candle for the first time, allow it to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the vessel — this is called a full melt pool. Achieving a full melt pool on the first burn prevents tunneling and ensures even, efficient burning for the life of the candle.

Tip: A good rule of thumb is to burn 1 hour for every inch of your candle’s diameter, without exceeding 4 hours per session.

2. Trim to Glow, Not Smoke

Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately ¼ inch. This helps maintain a controlled flame, reduces soot, and extends the life of your candle. A wick that’s too long may cause high flames, flickering, or smoking — all of which can be avoided with a quick trim.

No wick trimmer? Nail clippers or scissors work just as well.

3. Monitor Your Burn Time

Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Prolonged burns can lead to carbon build-up, cause the vessel to overheat, or reduce scent throw.
Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container. This helps prevent heat damage to surfaces and preserves the integrity of the vessel.

4. Handcrafted Means Unique

Because our candles are hand-poured in small batches, you may notice slight variations in surface texture, wick positioning, or wax appearance — especially after burning. These cosmetic differences are completely normal and a testament to the artisanal nature of our process.

5. Know What’s Underneath

Each candle includes a warning label affixed to the base. Please take a moment to read it before lighting — it contains important safety information that applies to every burn.
